Talk about a meeting of the minds!
Check out this nifty pic of Kevin Dunn (on the right) with Robert Schneider (of Apples in Stereo and Elephant 6 fame):
The picture was taking in Decatur, Georgia by our estimable associate John C. Falstaff, who first initiated the Kevin Dunn anthology now known as No Great Lost: Songs, 1979-1985 over a decade ago. Early on, Mr. Falstaff suggested we reach out to Mr. Schneider, as he knew the Apples frontman to be a fan of Kevin Dunn's stuff. Robert got back to us almost immediately with a fab quote that went on the sticker on the front of the CD:
“Snotty, literate pop from this underground master of the post-punk era, sounding like the missing link between Brian Eno circa Tiger Mountain, and XTC circa Drums and Wires – while also truly ahead of its time, like it could have been recorded by kids today. Oozing with angular hooks, synth bleeps and fuzz guitar wizardry, a compilation of songs that should be – and will be, and already are – classics.”
Thank you, Robert! We should add that Mr. Schneider is not just the leader of Apples in Stereo: as a producer, musician, engineer, and songwriter, he has played a crucial role in some of the very best and most influential underground pop albums of the past decade. He has a fantastic new Apples album out called Travellers in Space and Time, which you can buy here. We're partial to the three-sided LP format which, if you order quickly (or check your neighborhood indie retailer), comes with a free 12" EP of other bands covering Apples in Stereo, which is super cool.
That quote has been super handy lately, as we're in the publicity stage of the Kevin Dunn release, which is when we're on the phone and e-mail constantly, trying to let people in the media know about the release. It may be the hardest part of releasing an album, as it can be emotionally wearing to watch what is, to us, a very important project, become just one more CD in the stack of an overworked radio program director or freelance music writer or editor. A bracing dose of reality after a blissful gestation, indeed, but it's not all bad by any means...some great reviews are already lined up, and we'll get you some links/scans of those really soon. If you think of any media outlets that would appreciate this project, don't hesitate to e-mail us at mail [at symbol] casanueva [dot] net! Thank y'all...
